MEGC Training Courses

All courses will be designed, written and presented by Rachael Musgrave-Evans LS.


There is a frustrating lack of resources to assist Licensed Surveyors in the training of young surveyors in their employ. This contributes to the lack of progress of graduates who wish to advance to registration as a licensed surveyor.


The aim of our courses is to fill in the gaps and provide much needed guidance and resources to assist in the training of cadastral surveyors.


The training courses being offered by our office are primarily designed to provide surveying graduates with some training and support towards becoming registered as a Licensed Surveyor (graduates do not need to be in a formal Professional Training Agreement to be eligible to attend).  These sessions will also suit people with a TAFE qualification (surveying) or those who have some level of work experience as a cadastral surveyor.  These courses can also provide additional guidance to Licensed Surveyors.

Outline of Course Topics

Below are course topics to be covered in training modules over the coming year (2025).

Course 1 - Surveying From First Principles


This course has been designed to teach and familiarize participants with the following from first principles:

  • Traversing principles
  • Preparation of field cards
  • Potential sources of error and how to mitigate those errors
  • The ability to interrogate data collected in the field
  • Preparation of worksheets
  • Re-establishment computation exercises
  • The capacity to question re-establishment results
  • Quality Assurance processes for the checking of computations and final documentation.

Course 2 - Survey Information


(SRBV has allocated 5 Cadastral FPET points for Licensed Surveyors who register and attend)


This course will be focused on the significance and interpretation of old survey information and will feed into and complement the upcoming survey-based sessions (both urban and rural).


This course will cover the following:

  • The original Crown break-up of the State
  • The importance of historical survey information
  • Searching/Sources of survey information
  • Reading and interpreting old survey information
  • Parish Plans and Titles Office Charts


This course will also cover the re-establishment principles behind:

  • Government Road alignments
  • Crown boundaries
  • Property Law Act 1958

Course 3 - Rural Re-establishment - delivered over 2 days 


This course will be run as a rural re-establishment computational workshop exercise based on field work from our office.  The course will be run over two separate days.  The first session will be used to go through the survey information and field work and get participants started on their computations.  The second session will be run four weeks later.  The four week break will allow participants time to work on their computations before returning for a second session.  The second session will be used to go through each participants re-establishment giving feedback and guidance.


This course will also cover:


•Crown and Freehold Boundaries
•Crown boundary re-establishment and the Property Law Act 1958
•The monuments based system and survey differences
•Government Road Alignments
•Sources of survey information
•Parish Plans – CPO and LTO/Titles Office Charts
•Reading and interpreting old survey information
•Preparation of Worksheets
•Worked example – re-establishment of Government Roads and Crown boundaries
•River Boundaries


Course 4 – Planning - to be delivered Friday 17th October 2025


(SRBV FPET point allocation for Licensed Surveyors - 4 Development Planning and 1 Cadastral)


    This course is highly recommended for PTA candidates to assist them with their Professional Assessment Project as well as their Cadastral Law Project.


    The aim of this course is to provide participants with an introduction to the Victorian Planning System, specifically focusing on planning as it relates to land development.  The content will cover all legislative controls which govern the subdivision process.  

     

    This one-day course will cover the following:

    • Introduction to the Victorian Planning System
    • Development Planning and the Subdivision Process
    • Estate Design Principles and Rescode

Course 5 - Urban Re-establishment - to be delivered Friday 21 November 2025


(SRBV FPET point allocation for Licensed Surveyors - 5 Cadastral Points)

This one day course will go through urban re-establishment principles with full worked examples using surveys from our office.

Course 6 - Victorian Cadastral Law - to be delivered Friday 17 April 2026


( 5 Cadastral SRBV CPD points for Licensed Surveyors who register and attend)


A number of modules will be dedicated to Cadastral Law Theory covering a variety of topics:

  • Easements/Reserves
  • Roads
  • General Law Land
  • Transfer of Land Act 1958 Applications 60, 99 and 103
  • Transferability
  • Property Law Act 1958

    Cadastral Law scenarios will be created of varying complexities to assist attendees consolidate the theory being presented.  These will be rolled out over a number of modules progressively becoming more complex.
